POC’s Receptor Backcountry is such an impressive use of technology and materials combined to produce exceptional protection certified for use on the bike and in snow sports, with the additional safety of MIPS. If you’re pushing the boundaries and want the best this is the one for you.
POC are a Swedish company, and without being overly stereotypical, the Swedes are renowned for their ability to make safety equipment that sets new standards. Just look at the seat belt… thanks to this Swedish invention a life is saved every 6 seconds. POC have taken this heritage for ingenuity and invention to design new innovative protective equipment for the most demanding bikes riders.
Based on the original Receptor, the Backcountry MIPS version pushes on with an impressive list of innovative features to enhance the levels of protection. The helmet utilises a double shell, coupling an EPP liner and an Aramid Penetration Barrier. EPP differs from the usual EPS foam liners used in helmets as it can withstand multiple impacts, compressing on impact before returning to its original shape. The Aramid Penetration Barrier employs a thin yet tough layer within the shell to help withstand impacts from sharp or pointed objects. The double layers overlap to further improve resistance to penetrating impacts. Comfort isn’t compromised though owing to POC’s VDSAP ventilation system which creates a good path for air to flow through the double layer set up effectively.
The helmet also uses the heralded MIPS technology. MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System, what is does is simple yet very effective. A MIPS helmet has an extra layer built in that allows for a few millimetres of rotation in the event of a crash. This seemingly small movement can reduce the rotational forces from the impact and reduce the likelihood of concussive injury.
There are removable ear pads which can be fitted on colder days or when using it for snow sports. Plus there is a neckroll integrated with the Recco® avalanche rescue system – this is a two-part system used by ski resorts and mountain rescue teams that in the case of an incident sends a directional signal out that can be picked up by a receiver used by the rescue team to lead them straight to the site. More details can be found at www.recco.com.
